How to Spot a Hazardous Tree Before It's Too Late

Last updated By Todd Gammon

A hazardous tree rarely fails without warning. The signs are usually there for weeks, months, or even years before a limb drops or a trunk gives way. Knowing what to look for can be the difference between a planned removal and an expensive, dangerous emergency.

1. A sudden or worsening lean

Many trees lean naturally and are perfectly stable. The danger sign is a new lean, or one that's getting worse, especially if you can see soil cracking or lifting on one side of the base. That often means the root system is failing.

2. Dead or hanging branches

Large dead limbs (sometimes called widow-makers) can fall without any wind at all. If you see bare branches when the rest of the tree is leafed out, or limbs that are clearly cracked or hung up, it's time for a closer look.

3. Cracks and cavities in the trunk

Deep vertical cracks, splits where two trunks meet, or open cavities all weaken a tree's structure. They're entry points for decay and signs that the tree may not be able to hold itself up under load.

4. Fungus or mushrooms at the base

Mushrooms and shelf-like fungal growth on the trunk or roots are a red flag for internal decay. The tree may look fine from the outside while it's hollow and unstable within.

5. Thinning canopy or sudden leaf drop

If one side of the tree is noticeably thinner than the other, or the whole canopy is declining year over year, the tree may be stressed, diseased, or dying. A professional inspection can pinpoint the cause.

When in doubt, get it inspected

You don't have to diagnose the problem yourself. If any of these signs look familiar, schedule a tree health inspection. We'll assess the risk honestly and tell you whether the tree needs to come down, can be treated, or is perfectly safe to leave alone.
